在美国，公共卫生是每届总统后选人着重强调的三大问题之一，美国政府方面投入大量人力物力建设其卫生保健系统，而中国自从“SARS”以后，公共卫生也成为各大医学院最热门的专业之一，因此，公共卫生是发展前景非常不错的方向，历年来申请的人也在逐年攀升。公共卫生的职能就像是预防医学，从疾病爆发前的研究，到流行病的属性极其传播，再到疾病的控制与管理，从疾病的根本原因到上层的管理政策、分析、预防疾病的爆发。在美国，有些专门的公共卫生学院，公共卫生学院的前身很多都是从医学院里面发展开来的。
美国大学研究生的专业课程设置非常灵活，不同的学校有不同的专业，同一个专业在不同的学校可能会被分到不同的学院，主流的公共卫生专业包括：Biostatistics生物统计，Epidemiology流行病学，EnvironmentalHealthScience环境健康科学，HealthPolicyandadministration健康政策管理，CommunityHealthScience社区健康科学等等，当然最主流的还是流行病学Epidemiology和生物统计Biostatistics两个方向。
公共卫生学院，一般有4种学位，MPH，MS，Phd，DrPH。MS是普通的硕士，一般比较偏学术型，适合以后想攻读Phd的同学；MPH是职业性的，课程一般不会很偏重研究方法论，但MPH读出来一样可以申请Phd没有问题；Phd就是Phd了，不用解释了，总之就是真正想学术的人要选的那一种；DrPH是MPH的博士版本，也是偏职业的，不是应届生适合申请的。
